Regions, Countries, and Country Subdivisions

Define regions, countries, and country subdivisions in your marketplace and seller settings.

You can configure regions, countries, and country subdivisions in your marketplace and seller settings when creating a seller (via the Create Seller request) or when editing the seller's settings.

These settings allow the service to apply taxability logic based on geographic hierarchies.

Geographic hierarchy

The service organizes locations using a region→country→subdivision (state/province) hierarchical structure.

ISO codes

The service uses ISO 3166 codes to identify regions, countries, and subdivisions. You use these codes to configure your hierarchical structure. For details, refer to the list of country codes and codes for their subdivisions.

Regions and countries

Some countries, like Norway, are both regions and countries. Region definitions help apply shared taxability logic across multiple countries. You can define settings at both levels.

The service supports the following regions and countries:

European Union (EU)Austria (AT), Belgium (BE), Bulgaria (BG), Croatia (HR), Cyprus (CY), Czechia (CZ), Denmark (DK), Estonia (EE), Finland (FI), France (FR), Germany (DE), Greece (GR), Hungary (HU), Ireland (IE), Italy (IT), Latvia (LV), Lithuania (LT), Luxembourg (LU), Malta (MT), Netherlands (NL), Poland (PL), Portugal (PT), Romania (RO), Slovakia (SK), Slovenia (SI), Spain (ES), Sweden (SE)

Countries and country subdivisions

You can use ISO 3166 codes for subdivisions. For example, you can use US-PA for Pennsylvania. You can also use the subdivision abbreviation, for example, PA for Pennsylvania, if you prefer.

The service supports subdivisions for the following countries:

Subdivision codes can be used in your settings as well as in the following API fields:

  • billing_address
  • payment_address
  • ship_to_address
  • ship_from_address

Restrictions

Consider the following restrictions when defining countries, regions, and subdivisions:

  • European Union (EU) countries—Specify the region in most cases. If you need to indicate that a seller is registered in a specific country (using the is_seller_registered setting), also configure a country-level setting.
  • Non-European Union (EU) countries—Specify the country as both a country and a region. For example, for the United Kingdom (UK), for Great Britain (GB), configure Great Britain (GB) as both the country and the region.
  • Countries with subdivisions—Specify subdivisions (states/provinces) when you need them to model your sellers. For example, if a seller’s tax registration is specific to a Canadian province, configure the corresponding subdivision and apply the setting at that level.
  • Northern Ireland—Northern Ireland (NI) is part of the Great Britain (GB) region and country. If you need to apply settings specifically for Northern Ireland (NI)—for example, when a seller is registered there—configure Northern Ireland (NI) as a subdivision of Great Britain (GB).
