Australia (Peppol): Overview

Get an overview of the requirements for Australia.

This country uses the PEPPOL BIS Billing 3.0 specification for e-invoicing.

PEPPOL BIS Billing 3.0 is based on the Universal Business Language (UBL 2.1) format and adheres to the European standard for e-Invoicing (EN 16931).

PEPPOL also has its own requirements that are defined on top of UBL.

For Vertex e-Invoicing, this means you can create your VRBL as usual, but you must be aware of the requirements for each of the following formats and networks:

Mandate information

The Australian Tax Office is the Peppol Authority responsible for defining the requirements for use of the Peppol standards, administer accreditation of access points, promote the adoption of Peppol standards, and work to ensure that the Peppol framework is suitable and implemented consistently.

No legislation currently requires B2B e-invoicing; however, the Business eInvoicing Right (BER) initiative strongly encourages its adoption.

Since July 2022, federal government agencies were mandated to receive e-invoices. As of 2025, 129 government entities and more than 300 state and territory government entities and local councils are on the Peppol network. The Business eInvoicing Right (BER) initiative promotes the adoption of e-invoicing on a broader scale, that is, B2B and allows e-invoice receivers to request that their sellers issue invoices using Peppol.
